Karma (The Law of Cause and Effect II.12)
Major Arcanum: Justice
Karma (II.12) — every action plants a seed that bears fruit.
Every action is a seed. Before you act today, ask: what fruit will this grow?
What Karma is
Karma is a plain word: it means action. It is not punishment or reward filed away in some invisible ledger. It is the trace that each thing you do leaves in you. Lift an arm and the muscle learns; repeat a thought and it gets easier to think the next time. The fruit Yoga talks about starts there, inside the one who acted. Before it comes back from the world, the action has already come home. And nobody keeps that trace for you.
In the sutra
In II.12, Patañjali is not talking about punishment: he is talking about a deposit. Action accumulates, and that accumulation has its root in the afflictions — attachment, aversion, fear. Which means the fruit does not come from the act on its own, but from the motive that pushed it. Two identical gestures, different motives, different seeds. So the sutra looks inward before it looks at the result. The question stops being what you did and becomes where it came from.
How it shows up
On the mat, karma is repetition you can see. The correction you have been hearing for months is the fruit of practicing it wrong on your own at home. The shoulder that always jams on the same side did not show up today: it was built, class by class, every time you entered the posture by the shortest route.
Off the mat, the fruit arrives late, and that is where it stings. Tomorrow's schedule is made of the things you put off yesterday. Nobody has the people around them by accident: they are the result of who you answered and who you left hanging. And the people you live with learn your tone of voice long before they learn your advice.
Why this card
Justice in the tarot sits facing you, a sword raised in one hand and a pair of scales in the other. Unlike the statue outside a courthouse, she is not blindfolded: she looks straight at whoever turns up. The scales do not judge what you feel, they weigh what you did. And the sword cuts both ways, because the same law that measures the other one measures you. Karma without a court: the bill is not charged, it is consequence.
Today
Do one small thing today whose result only shows up weeks from now: pay a bill before it is due, send the message you keep putting off, put the tool back where it belongs. Nothing that feels good right now. Only what next month's version of you will be grateful for. Notice the urge to leave it for later while you do it.
